CanManageNot

This blog is dedicated to millions of small and large businesses in which serious management mishap occur on a daily basis. Hoping to turn this into a community learning tool for all those who do not have a clue about successfully managing, leading or otherwise affecting the daily and future lives of so many others.

Problem with blogging is as long as you have material, you can't stop writing, it becomes an obsession.

Key point is you have to have material. Boy do I have material! This place I am working at generates this stuff in volumes a minute.

Anyway just after finishing the previous post, I looked at my email and there it was: invitation to monthly company social. There is nothing social about this thing but it's name. It is one of those artificial things that pseudo managers do to think that (or show off that) they are doing the right stuff.

Right stuff needs to be done internally, by creating a culture where people become sociable because that would be the only way. Not like gathering once a month for a couple of drinks and behave as if they are social.

It is all craziness. It makes me laugh and cry at the same time to realize how some managers defy reality or they just can not see.

This company I am working for at present is horrendous in terms of turnover. I brought the issue up with the HR Director. He assured me we were not the worst, He said he knows another technology company which has a higher turnover.

Let me tell you, brain surgeons are running this company. Same HR Director fired our beloved receptionist after 5 years of loyal service. Now I don't know what you think but in my books if the employee was appreciated and kept for 5 years, when something like this happens, fault lies in her immediate management.

We don't know exactly what happened, that's another thing, people are being let go and nobody knows why.

I know the answer to all of this; you see these people were originally brain surgeons but they did not find it challenging enough, so they decided to take up small company management positions.

That's all for now.

Because I secured new business which spanned a number of departments, now I am told through an unexpected email that I am reporting to a new manager. That's it. No previous conversation, no discussion of past present and the future. It blows my mind how these small businesses (and a lot of large ones too) are being run. Funny part is they even stay in the business. They don't grow much though. No wonder...

Another piece of interesting management twist is my new manager did not really give any welcome speech or a little motivational talk to me either. He is following company culture.

So I am basically in the dark as far as what this new reporting structure supposed to be and about. More importantly how it is going to help me and the company. Oh well, I am a big boy, I can handle it and figure it out.

In my current company, there is a major disagreement between the CEO and the Executive Vice President in terms of offerings strategy. It's little funny because the CEO is also the sole owner and he just promoted this person to EVP position. Go figure...

Having been in the workforce for quite some time, I always wondered with all the information available at our fingertips, why some managers/leaders just don't get it. At first, one would think they are simply not smart. Then you think they may be insensitive. Yet again, you think they don't care.

Well, I've seen ultra incapable managers yet they had some or all the above qualities. So I still wonder what is it? I am looking for answers... And yes, I read all the guru's books...

The angle this blog is going to take is not the teachings of the guru's but rather why so many people in maanagement positions even after exposing themselves to the world of information on the topic can not function at the level others expect from them.

We shall see. I hope we start getting a lot of contributions.
